SDS drills, also sold as rotary hammers or SDS-Plus hammer drills, are the right tool for drilling and light chiselling in concrete, brick and stone. We stock Bosch Professional GBH, Makita HR, Metabo KHE and UHEV, DeWalt D25, Hikoki DH and Einhell TC-RH rotary hammers, corded and cordless, with chuck capacities from 20 to 32mm.
Choosing an SDS drill
- Drilling capacity: 2kg class hammers (Bosch GBH 2-24, Makita HR2475, Hikoki DH24PH2) drill up to 24mm in concrete and suit anchors and services. 26 to 28mm machines (GBH 2-26, 2-28, Makita HR2630, DH28PC) handle heavier anchor holes. The Bosch GBH 4-32 and DeWalt D25413K take 32mm bits and are closer to SDS-Max in power.
- Modes: three-mode hammers add rotation stop so you can chisel, which is useful for chasing and tile removal. Two-mode models drill only and cost less.
- Chuck: DFR and F versions (Bosch GBH 2-26 F, 2-28 F, 4-32 DFR) include a quick-change keyless chuck for standard round-shank bits.
- Corded or cordless: cordless SDS hammers from Metabo, Hikoki, Einhell and Festool suit site work without power; corded still wins on continuous use per rand.
Bosch SDS drill vs the rest
The Bosch GBH 2-24 and 2-26 are the default choice on South African sites for good reason: parts are available, the SDS-Plus system is universal and they survive abuse. Makita HR2475 and Hikoki DH26PMC are equally proven alternatives at similar money, while Einhell offers a budget route for occasional drilling. Metabo's KHE and UHEV models add safety clutches and vibration control for daily users. Pair your hammer with SDS chisels, step up to SDS Max rotary hammers for 40mm plus, or compare battery options in cordless SDS rotary hammers.
