A grinding disc is the consumable that does the hard work on an angle grinder: dressing welds, bevelling plate, levelling concrete and removing old coatings. This collection covers Bosch metal grinding discs, Bosch INOX discs for stainless, Bosch diamond cup wheels and concrete grinding heads, and a Makita offset diamond wheel, in the common South African angle grinder sizes.
Choosing a grinding disc
- Match the grinder size. Bosch Standard for Metal A24 P BF grinding discs are stocked in 115mm, 125mm, 180mm and 230mm, all on the 22.23mm bore. Buy the diameter your grinder guard is rated for.
- Metal or concrete. A bonded abrasive disc is for steel. For concrete, screed and masonry you need a diamond cup wheel or grinding head, which grinds without wearing away in minutes.
- Stainless needs INOX. The Bosch INOX grinding disc is made without iron, sulphur or chlorine fillers, so it will not contaminate stainless steel and cause rust spots.
- Grit on diamond cups. Bosch cup wheels come in coarse, medium and fine, flat or slanted. Coarse strips paint and levels high spots. Fine prepares a floor for coating.
- Multi-material heads. The Bosch PRO multi-material grinding head in 125mm handles concrete, plaster and tile adhesive on one disc.
Grinding discs versus cutting discs
A grinding disc is thick, usually 6mm, with a depressed centre, and is used on its face. A cutting disc is thin and used on its edge. Never cut with a grinding disc or grind with a cutting disc. For slicing steel see steel cutting discs, and for brick, concrete and tile see diamond cutting discs. If the grinder itself needs replacing, browse angle grinders from Bosch, Makita, DeWalt and Metabo, and the wider abrasives range.
