Pocket hole screws from Kreg, Milescraft and Bora in the lengths, threads and coatings pocket-hole joinery calls for, plus collated drywall screws from Bosch and Festool for auto-feed screwdrivers. Whether you are building a few cabinet face frames or running production, matching the screw to the timber is what makes the joint hold.
Choosing pocket hole screws
- Coarse or fine thread. Coarse thread bites into pine, plywood and MDF. Fine thread is for hardwoods such as oak and meranti where a coarse thread would split the grain.
- Length. Stocked from 3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch. As a rule of thumb, 1-1/4 inch suits 19mm boards, 1 inch for 12mm, and 2-1/2 inch for 38mm framing stock.
- Coating. Standard zinc screws are for indoor work. Kreg Blue-Kote is a weather-resistant coating for outdoor furniture, and Kreg stainless steel and Protec-Kote deck screws are for exposed decking.
- Head type. Washer heads spread the load and stop pull-through in soft material; pan heads are used where the head sits in a shallower pocket.
- Kits. Kreg, Milescraft and Bora assortment kits give you a spread of lengths in a case if you are just getting started.
Kreg screws and the rest of the system
Kreg screws are sized to the Kreg jig drill guide, and the square-drive head keeps the driver seated at the angle a pocket hole demands. Pair them with a jig from pocket hole jigs, the full Kreg tools range, and face clamps from clamps to keep the joint flush while the screw pulls it tight.
