Screwdriver bits are cheap until they round off a screw head halfway through a deck, so it pays to match the bit to the driver and the fastener. This collection has impact-rated and standard bits in Pozidriv, Phillips, Torx, hex and square drive from Bosch, Wera, Festool, Makita, DeWalt, Gedore, MilesCraft and Kreg, as single bits, bulk packs, bit holders, nutsetters and boxed sets.
Choosing screwdriver bits
- Drive type. Most South African wood and chipboard screws are PZ2 Pozidriv; drywall and many machine screws are PH2 Phillips; Torx (TX) is used on decking, roofing and Festool fasteners; Kreg pocket-hole screws take a #2 square drive.
- Impact or standard. Bosch Impact Control, Wera Torsion and BiTorsion, DeWalt Flextorq and Festool BT-IMP bits have a torsion zone that flexes under an impact driver instead of snapping. Standard "extra hard" bits are fine in a drill driver.
- Length. 25mm bits sit in a magnetic holder; 50mm to 55mm bits go straight into the driver chuck; 89mm, 90mm and 150mm bits reach into recesses and past screw heads on long fixings.
- Bit holders. A magnetic holder (Bosch 60mm to 300mm, Makita Ultra Mag, Festool BH 60) holds the screw on the bit and takes the wear so the bit does not.
Screwdriver bit sets
A set covers the sizes you meet on site. The Bosch Impact Control 36-piece and Precision 42-piece sets, the DeWalt Flextorq 37-piece, and the Wera Bit-Check and Kraftform Kompakt sets (which add a handle, so the set doubles as a screwdriver) are the popular choices. Festool's SYS3 XXS bit assortments slot into a Systainer. Pair your bits with an impact driver, stock up on drill bits, or browse the full Wera range.
