Drill chucks and chuck adaptors from Makita, Bosch, Festool and Tork Craft, for replacing a worn chuck or converting an SDS drill to take round-shank bits. A chuck that slips, will not open fully or runs out of true is cheaper to replace than the drill, and on most drills it is a ten-minute job. This collection covers keyless and keyed chucks in 10 mm, 13 mm and 16 mm, SDS plus adaptors and Morse taper adaptors for drill presses.
Choosing a drill chuck
- Thread: most 13 mm chucks are 1/2"-20 UNF; the smaller 10 mm chucks are 3/8"-24 UNF. The 16 mm Bosch keyed chucks come in B-16 taper and 5/8"-16 thread for drill presses. Check your old chuck or the drill manual before ordering.
- Keyless drill chuck or keyed: keyless is quicker for bit changes and is standard on cordless drills; a keyed chuck grips harder for large bits and hole saws in a drill press.
- Capacity: 10 mm for compact drill drivers, 13 mm for most 18 V drills and corded hammer drills, 16 mm for pedestal drills.
- Brand-specific: Makita and Bosch chucks are listed by part number so they fit the original drill. The Festool Centrotec and FastFix chucks suit Festool drills only; the Tork Craft 10 mm keyed chuck is the budget option.
SDS chuck adaptors
An SDS plus to 13 mm adaptor lets a rotary hammer drill run normal twist bits and hole saws in rotation-only mode. Makita and Bosch both make them, and the Bosch SDS-plus chuck adaptor converts older Bosch rotary hammers the same way. Just switch off hammer action before you use one.
