Sanding paper for hand sanding, sheet sanders and sanding blocks: Bosch wet and dry sheets, cloth-backed rolls and hook-and-loop sheets for orbital sheet sanders, Mirka Abranet net rolls, a Festool Granat abrasive sponge and the Milescraft EdgeSander block. This is the collection for sandpaper sold flat, in rolls or in sheets rather than as velcro discs.
Choosing sanding paper
- Full sheets for hand sanding: Bosch C344 wet and dry in 280 x 230mm, sold in boxes of 100 for workshops that cut their own. Select the grit on the product page.
- Sheet sander paper: Bosch Expert for Wood and Paint in 93 x 186mm 8-hole hook and loop for 1/3 sheet sanders, 93 x 230mm clip-on for sanders without velcro, and C470 115 x 107mm 6-hole for 1/4 sheet sanders.
- Rolls: Bosch J450 cloth-backed 5m roll for hand and lathe work; Mirka Abranet 75mm and 115mm x 25m grip rolls for cutting your own net strips for blocks and file boards.
- Sponges and pads: Festool Granat abrasive sponge for mouldings and edges, Bosch fleece pads for keying between coats.
Sandpaper for wood: 40 to 400 grit
Start no coarser than you need. 40 to 60 grit removes material and old finish, 80 to 120 flattens and removes machine marks, 150 to 180 is the usual stopping point before oil or stain, and 240 to 400 is for between coats and final rub-downs. Wet and dry paper from 400 up is for finishing, not bare timber. For machine discs see velcro sanding discs and delta sanding paper, and for the full range of belts, discs and rolls see abrasives.
