Hammers and mallets for carpenters, builders, mechanics and woodworkers, from Real Steel, Narex, Stanley FatMax and Jorgensen. The Real Steel range covers claw hammers, ball pein and machinist hammers, club and sledge hammers, dead blow and brass hammers in a choice of hickory, graphite, fibreglass and all-steel handles. Narex supplies the joiner's, carpenter's and carving mallets for chisel work.
Choosing a hammer
- Claw hammer: 450 g (16 oz) curved claw for general carpentry and nail pulling; 570 g (20 oz) rip claw for framing and demolition. The Stanley FatMax Anti-Vibe is the choice if you swing one all day.
- Club hammer: 1.3 kg and 1.8 kg Real Steel club hammers with unbreakable graphite handles for driving bolsters, chisels and pegs.
- Ball pein and machinist: 100 g to 1 kg heads for metalwork, punches and riveting.
- Sledge hammers: 900 g cross-strike up to 5.4 kg (12 lb) on a 900 mm handle for breaking and driving posts.
- Dead blow and brass: dead blow hammers for seating parts without bounce; brass hammers where you must not mark the work or strike a spark.
Carpenter hammer vs rubber mallet
A steel hammer drives nails; it should never hit a chisel handle or a finished surface. For chisel work use a Narex joiner's or carpenter's mallet (336 g to 726 g) or a round carving mallet, which lands square without you looking at it. For assembly, tapping joints home and knocking a tile level, the Real Steel white rubber, urethane and double-head mallets give a solid blow without bruising the timber.
