Electric planers for trimming doors, flattening boards and chamfering edges, from compact 82mm hand-held machines to a cordless planer and the Makita 2012NB planer thicknesser for dimensioning stock. It suits site carpenters, furniture makers and keen DIYers. Brands stocked are Makita, Bosch Professional, DeWalt, Festool and Hikoki.
Choosing an electric planer
- Cutting width. 82mm is the standard across Makita, Bosch, DeWalt and Hikoki. The Festool EHL 65 is a one-handed 65mm planer for lighter trimming, and the Festool HL 850 cuts 82mm with a rebate capacity most others cannot match.
- Power. Makita MT M1901B and M1902B at 500W and the Hikoki P20SF at 620W handle door edges and softwood. The Makita KP0810K at 850W and Bosch GHO 26-82 D are for hardwood and heavier passes.
- Cutting depth. DeWalt D26676 takes 1.5mm per pass, the DW680 2.5mm. Deeper cuts remove stock faster at the cost of finish.
- Corded or cordless. The Makita DKP180Z is an 18V LXT bare tool for fitting doors without a lead.
- Thicknessing. The Makita 2012NB is a bench planer thicknesser for bringing rough boards to a consistent thickness.
Makita hand planer or Bosch?
A Makita hand planer such as the KP0800K is the trade default in South Africa, with blades and parts always available. Bosch Professional planers match it on build with a slightly different grip and depth adjuster, so the choice often comes down to which brand already fills your van. Replacement blades for every model here are in planer blades, bench machines in thicknessers, and the cordless option sits with the rest of the Makita 18V LXT range.
