A dumpy level, also called an automatic or optical level, is the simplest reliable way to transfer heights across a site. This collection holds the Bosch Professional GOL optical levels and the measuring rod that goes with them, for builders, landscapers, paving contractors and anyone setting out foundations, drainage falls or retaining walls.
Choosing a dumpy level
- Magnification. The Bosch Professional GOL 26 D Optical Level is the everyday choice for house sites and gardens. The Bosch Professional Optical Level GOL 32 D gives higher magnification for longer sight lines on bigger plots.
- Staff and tripod. The level alone is not enough. You need a measuring staff such as the Bosch Professional Measuring Rod GR 500 and a tripod to mount the instrument.
- Robustness. Optical levels have no batteries or electronics to fail. Keep the instrument in its case between uses and check it stays level before each reading.
- Working range. Longer sight lines need higher magnification and a steady tripod. For a single plot, the GOL 26 D covers most work.
How a dumpy level works
Set the tripod on firm ground, mount the level and centre the bubble. The automatic compensator then holds the line of sight horizontal. Your helper stands the measuring rod on the point you want to check, and you read the height through the eyepiece. Subtract readings between points to get the difference in level. It takes ten minutes to learn and is still the method most contractors trust for foundations and drainage.
These levels and staffs are in stock at our Claremont, Cape Town shop and ship nationwide by courier. Our staff use levelling tools daily and can show you how to set one up. See also Stabila spirit levels, ADA Instruments laser levels and our tape measures.
