Choosing woodworking squares
- Speed square. Swanson, Milescraft and DeWalt rafter squares in 18cm to 30cm are the carpenter's square for marking cuts and guiding a circular saw. Swanson metric models save conversions on local timber.
- Combination square. Stanley, Swanson and the Woodpeckers In-Dexable combo square give an adjustable blade for marking depths and checking 45 and 90 degrees.
- Precision squares. Woodpeckers 641 and 851 squares, stainless steel squares in 150mm and 300mm, and the 450mm precision square are machined for cabinet and furniture work where a speed square is not accurate enough.

Speed square or combination square?
A speed square is quick, tough and lives in a tool belt. A combination square adjusts, scribes parallel lines and measures depth, which makes it the better bench tool. Most woodworkers end up with both and add a precision square once they start fitting doors and drawers.
