A sanding block keeps abrasive flat and even, so hand sanding wood leaves no finger grooves or rounded edges. This collection holds hand sanding blocks and pads from Bosch, Festool and Mirka plus a long levelling block, covering flat panels, edges, mouldings and curves. They suit furniture makers, painters, car body shops and anyone finishing timber by hand.
Choosing a sanding block
- Flat or contour. The Bosch Abrasive sanding block Best for Flat & Edge is a firm foam block for panels and square edges. The Bosch Contour sanding block Best for Contour flexes around curves, and the Bosch abrasive sanding block Best for Profile 68 x 97 x 27 mm, fine gets into mouldings.
- Block or pad for sheets. The Mirka Sanding Block Grey 70 x 125 mm takes strips of abrasive and suits car body filler. The Festool Sanding Block HSK 80X133 H is a hand pad for hook-and-loop sheets, so you use the same abrasive as your sander.
- Abrasive built in. The Festool Sanding block Granat 69x98x26 GR/6 comes in a choice of grits, which saves wrapping paper around a block.
- Long and straight. The Spatzi's Sanding Block 75 x 457 levels long edges, table tops and body panels where a short block would follow the bumps.
Which grit for hand sanding wood?
Start with the coarsest grit that removes the marks you have, then step up without skipping more than one grade. On bare timber, a medium grit flattens the surface and a fine grit prepares it for finish. For gentler sanding on a machine, the Mirka Net Interface Ø 150 mm Grip sits between a 150 mm sander and the disc.
