A pencil grinder, also sold as a die grinder or straight grinder, spins a small burr or mounted point at high speed for deburring, porting, polishing and grinding in places an angle grinder cannot reach. This collection holds electric and air die grinders from Makita, Bosch Professional, Hikoki, Metabo and Dewalt.
Choosing a die grinder
- Power. The Hikoki Die Grinder 520w GP2S2 suits light deburring. The Hikoki Die Grinder 760w GP3V and Metabo Die Grinder GE 950 G PLUS have the torque for heavier stock removal.
- Short or long neck. A long-neck grinder reaches inside pipes and castings. The Dewalt 450W 6Mm Long Neck Die Grinder DWE4887N and Bosch Professional Straight Grinder GGS 8 SH are built for that reach. The Makita Die Grinder GD0600 is compact for general work.
- Speed control. Variable speed lets you match the burr and material. The Metabo Die Grinder GEP 950 G PLUS and Hikoki GP5V have it; the Bosch Professional Straight Grinder GGS 30 S is a fixed-speed workhorse.
- Electric or air. If you already run a compressor, the Metabo Air Die Grinder DG 25 SET is lighter in the hand. The Makita Die Grinder GD0800C is an electric alternative.
Pencil grinder, die grinder or straight grinder
These names describe the same tool. Pencil grinder is the common South African term, die grinder comes from tool-and-die work, and straight grinder is how Bosch labels its GGS range. All hold a burr in a collet at high speed. The Bosch Professional Straight Grinder GGS 5 LS and the Makita Straight Grinder GS5000 are larger straight grinders that take bigger grinding points for heavier fabrication.
Every tool here is in stock at our Claremont, Cape Town shop and ships nationwide by courier. Our staff use die grinders daily and can advise on burrs and speeds. See pencil grinder bits, large angle grinders, or all corded power tools.
