Welding clamps and holders are the two points where current enters and leaves the job, so a worn earth clamp or a loose electrode holder shows up straight away as a bad arc. This collection carries the Matweld range: crocodile and G-type earth clamps from 200A to 600A, electrode holders in KD, jaw-type, Optimus and twist-lock patterns from 300A to 600A, and gas hose clamps.
Choosing welding clamps
- Amperage rating. Match or exceed your machine. A 200A crocodile earth clamp suits a 120A to 200A inverter; the 400A and 600A clamps are for larger MIG and MMA sets and the 380V industrial machines.
- Earth clamp pattern. Crocodile (spring) clamps are quick to move around the job. The brass G-type screw clamp gives a solid, low-resistance connection on heavy fabrication and does not get knocked off.
- Electrode holder style. KD and jaw-type holders are the standard spring-loaded pattern. Optimus holders are the heavier-duty pattern in 300A, 400A and 600A. Twist-lock holders grip the electrode by turning the handle, which many welders prefer for a firm hold at awkward angles.
- Cable connection. Check the holder or clamp accepts your cable size and lug before you buy, and see welding cables for leads and connectors.
Welding earth clamp and electrode holder maintenance
Clean the earth clamp contact faces regularly and clamp onto bare metal, not paint or mill scale. Replace electrode holders when the jaws no longer bite or the insulation cracks; a holder that arcs at the jaw wastes current and burns the welder's glove. For magnetic positioning, the Matweld 25lb welder's magnet is listed with the welding machines, and torch consumables are in welding nozzles and tips. The complete range is under MatWeld.
