Choosing SDS chisels
- Match the shank: SDS-Plus fits 2 to 4kg rotary hammers (Bosch GBH 2-24, Makita HR2470 class). SDS-Max fits 5kg and heavier combination and demolition hammers. 28mm hex is for large breakers such as the Bosch GSH 16-28 and Makita HM1812; 22mm hex suits mid-size breakers.
- Flat or cold chisel: general chipping, trenching and breaking out. 20 x 250mm in SDS-Plus; 25 x 400mm in SDS-Max.
- Pointed or bull point: starting holes and breaking up mass concrete. Available 250 to 600mm.
- Spade and wide chisels: 40 to 135mm wide for removing render, plaster and asphalt in sheets.
- Tile and scaling chisels: flat, wide heads that lift tiles and scale rust or coatings without digging in.
- Specialist: gouging, mortar and asphalt cutters for pointing, channels and road work.

Bosch's PRO 4C and 5C ranges are the long-life option, with a hardened shank that resists mushrooming, which matters when a chisel is in a breaker all day.
