A carpenters pencil that holds a line on rough timber, a deep hole marker that reaches through a drilled hole, and leads that show on dark or wet material are the difference between a mark you can trust and one you re-measure. This collection brings together Pica, Tracer, Bosch, Uni, Incra and MilesCraft marking pencils, markers, scribes and refills for carpenters, joiners, plumbers, electricians and tilers.
Choosing a carpenters pencil or marking pencil
- Traditional flat carpenters pencil. Tracer's 4H carpenters pencils in a 12-pack come with a sharpener, and the Pica Pocket carpenter's pencil has a holster so it stays on your belt and not in the sawdust.
- Deep hole marker. The Pica Dry, Tracer Deep Pencil Marker and Bosch deep hole mechanical pencil push a 2.8mm lead through a drilled hole or a bracket slot to mark the wall behind it.
- Lead hardness and colour. Pica Dry refills come in graphite 2B, H and 10H, plus white, red, yellow and summer sets for marking dark timber, steel, tiles and wet surfaces. Tracer leads come in 2B, red and white.
- Fine lines for joinery. The Pica Fine Dry 0.9mm, Uni Kuru Toga 0.5mm and Incra 0.5mm mechanical pencils give a crisp line for dovetails and cabinet layout.
- Permanent marks. Pica Ink deep hole markers, Pica Big Dry construction markers and Tracer lumber crayons cover framing, roofing and site work.
Pica Dry and the Pica system
The Pica Dry Longlife Automatic Pencil is the one most tradespeople end up with. The quiver has a built-in sharpener, the lead is 2.8mm so it survives a drop, and the same body takes every Pica Dry refill. Pica Master Sets bundle the pencil, Ink marker and refills for joiners, carpenters or plumbers and electricians. See the full Pica marking tools range, and pair your pencil with a decent tape measure and square.
