A good tape measure is the first thing out of the bag on any job, and this collection covers the measuring tapes we sell most: Stanley, Stanley FatMax, Bosch, Shinwa and Festool, in lengths from 5 m to 8 m. It suits builders, cabinet makers and electricians.
Choosing a tape measure
- Length. A 5 m tape like the Bosch Tape Measure 5m or Stanley FatMax Pro 5m handles cabinetry and most indoor work. For roofing, decking and setting out, step up to the Stanley FatMax Pro Tape Measure 8m.
- Blade width and standout. A wider blade stays rigid further when you reach across a gap. The FatMax Pro blades are built for exactly that, while the Stanley Powerlock is slimmer and lighter in the pocket.
- Markings. The Shinwa Sokutei Convex Double Sided Metric Tape Measure 5.5m prints the scale on both faces of the blade, which is handy when you read from underneath. The Festool Tape measure MB 5m is a compact metric tape for the workshop.
- Durability. The Stanley Tylon has a coated blade for everyday site use. Both Stanley tapes come in a choice of sizes.
Stanley tape measure or Stanley FatMax
The Stanley Powerlock and Tylon are the classic pocket tapes: light, simple and dependable. The FatMax Pro range uses a wider, stiffer blade and a tougher case, so it suits daily use on site and longer unsupported measurements. Working alone across door openings or roof trusses, most trade customers pick the FatMax Pro 8m. For setting out lines, the Stanley FatMax Chalk Line Reel Set pairs well with either tape.
All of these tapes are in stock at our Claremont, Cape Town shop and ship nationwide by courier. Our staff use these tapes every day in the workshop and can help you choose. See also our Stanley FatMax range, the full Stanley collection and our wider hand tools.
