A multi tool does the awkward jobs that no other power tool manages: flush cuts in skirting, plunge cuts in floorboards, grout removal and detail sanding. This collection holds oscillating multi tools from Bosch, Dewalt, Makita, Einhell, Hikoki and Metabo, plus the Dremel rotary range.
Choosing a multi tool
- Oscillating or rotary. An oscillating multi tool swings a blade a few degrees side to side, so it cuts and scrapes. A Dremel like the Dremel 4250 or Dremel 8240 spins a small bit at high speed for engraving, grinding and polishing.
- Corded or cordless. The Bosch DIY PMF 220 CE Set and Makita Multi Tool TM3000CX2 plug in and never run flat. The Dewalt 18V Brushless Oscillating Multi-Tool DCS358NT and Einhell TE-MT 18/34 Li Solo run on batteries you may already own.
- Trade or DIY. The Bosch Professional GOP 30-28 and Metabo MT 400 QUICK SET are built for daily site use with quick blade changes. The Hikoki Multi Tool CV350V2 sits in the same bracket.
- Kit or solo. Solo tools come without a battery. Sets such as the Dremel 8250 (8250-5) and Dremel 3000 include accessories to start straight away.
Oscillating tool or oscillating saw
These are the same tool. People searching for an oscillating saw usually want the plunge and flush cutting ability of an oscillating multi tool, which uses a half-moon or straight plunge blade. The same machine takes scraper blades, sanding pads and grout rasps. For very fine cutting, the Dremel Moto Saw is a small scroll saw rather than an oscillating tool, and the Dremel Stylo 2050-15 is a pen-style rotary tool for detail.
