A bench grinder is the sharpening and deburring station of the workshop: it puts an edge back on chisels, drill bits and mower blades and cleans up cut steel before welding. This collection has 150mm and 200mm bench grinders from Bosch Professional, Metabo and Einhell, plus a belt grinder and a belt-and-wheel combo for shaping and finishing.
Choosing a bench grinder
- Wheel size. 150mm grinders (Einhell TC-BG 150, Metabo DS 150 M, Bosch GBG 35-15) are enough for home and light trade sharpening. 200mm grinders (Einhell TC-BG 200 L, Metabo DS 200 PLUS, Bosch GBG 60-20) have more motor and a bigger wheel face for fabrication use, and the wheels last longer.
- Motor power. The Bosch model numbers give it away: GBG 35-15 is 350W on 150mm wheels, GBG 60-20 is 600W on 200mm. The Metabo DSD 200 PLUS is the three-phase version for a workshop with a 400V supply.
- Belt or wheel. The Einhell TC-US 350 belt grinder and the Metabo BS 200 PLUS combo (belt plus 200mm wheel) give a flat, cool-cutting surface that suits knives, plane irons and shaping timber or aluminium.
- Mounting. Bolt it to the bench or a pedestal stand. A grinder that walks is dangerous.
Bench grinder vs angle grinder
A bench grinder brings the work to a fixed wheel, which is what you want for controlled sharpening and small parts. An angle grinder takes the wheel to the work, for cutting, grinding welds and dressing large steel. The hand-held machines are in angle grinders. If you are mainly sharpening woodworking tools, see our wood chisels, and the full Metabo range for the rest of the stationary line-up.
