Broach cutters, also called annular cutters or mag drill cutters, cut clean holes in structural steel far faster than a twist drill because they only remove the ring of material around the slug. We stock Euroboor HSS cutters in 35mm and 55mm depth and Bosch TCT annular cutters in 35mm and 50mm depth, with pilot pins for both.
Choosing a broach cutter
- HSS or TCT: Euroboor HSS cutters suit mild steel and can be resharpened. Bosch tungsten carbide tipped cutters cost more but hold an edge longer in harder steel, stainless and at higher speeds.
- Cutting depth: 35mm is the standard for plate and sections up to that thickness. Go to 50 or 55mm for thick plate, stacked sections and beams.
- Diameter: both ranges are sold by size on the product page. Order to the bolt clearance you need rather than the nominal bolt size.
- Pilot pin: the pin length must match the cutter depth. Euroboor sells pins by size; Bosch 90mm pins suit 35mm cutters and 106mm pins suit 50mm cutters, in 6.34 or 8mm diameter to match the cutter bore.
- Shank: check the arbor on your magnetic drill takes the Weldon shank on these cutters.
Annular cutters and your magnetic drill
A broach cutter only works in a magnetic drill or a drill press with the right arbor and a coolant feed. Use cutting fluid, keep the feed steady and clear the slug after every hole. Pins are consumable: replace a bent pilot pin before it ruins a cutter. See our magnetic drills, the full Euroboor range and drill bits for pilot and twist drilling.
