Choosing a Makita battery
- Platform: 18V LXT batteries fit every LXT tool, including 36V (18V x 2) tools that take two. 40V XGT batteries fit only XGT tools. The two are not interchangeable.
- Capacity: 3.0Ah keeps a drill or impact driver light. 5.0Ah is the all-round choice for grinders and saws. 6.0Ah and 12.0Ah give the longest run time on 36V tools, mowers and chainsaws, at a weight cost.
- Replacement or spare: if your old battery no longer holds charge, replace like for like. If you want more run time, step up one capacity; the charger will handle it.
- 40V XGT: the 4.0Ah BL4040 is the common kit battery. BL4050F and BL4080H are for high-draw tools like the 40V grinders, rotary hammers and garden tools.
Makita 18V battery price vs replacement batteries
Aftermarket Makita replacement batteries are cheaper for a reason: lower-grade cells, no proper thermal communication with the charger and a real fire risk under high load. A genuine BL1850B costs more but is the battery Makita supports locally, and it will not damage your tools or charger.
