Wood filler and knot repair from Wood Repair: the Thermelt hot-melt knot filler system used by furniture makers, flooring fitters, joiners and timber-frame builders to fill knots, cracks, splits and resin pockets in minutes, plus the WM E800 Aqua+ paste filler for sanding and painting. Unlike a conventional wood filler, Thermelt is a thermoplastic that sets hard as it cools, can be planed, sanded and finished straight away, and will not shrink or crack out later.
Choosing a wood filler
- Thermelt knot filler sticks: 300 mm sticks in a range of timber colours, sold individually, in 9-packs and in two compact mix packs. Pick a shade slightly darker than the surrounding wood for knots and a close match for cracks.
- Kits: the PLUS+ kit includes the applicator gun, sticks and finishing tools to get started; the Pro kit adds the cutting tool, cooling brick and a wider colour range for production work.
- Paste filler: WM E800 Aqua+ is a water-based paste wood filler for small holes, nail heads and grain filling before paint or lacquer.
- Accessories: cleaning sticks for the gun, the knot filler saver to catch drips, the cutting tool for levelling, and cooling bricks to set the filler fast.
Wood repair on site and in the workshop
Thermelt is the standard for repairing knots in pine and Saligna before a clear finish, and for filling the end-grain checks in oak and ash flooring. Heat the stick in the applicator, flood the defect, let it cool, then level it with the cutting tool and sand. The result takes stain, oil and lacquer with the surrounding wood. It is also stocked in Cape Town as single sticks, so you can try a colour before buying a pack.
Related: glue guns, glue sticks, and sanders for the finishing stage.
