Choosing router accessories
- Collets: buy the collet for your router model and the shank you cut with. Makita collet cones come in 6mm, 8mm, 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch; Festool SZ-D collets for the OF 1000 come in 6mm and 6.35mm; the Bosch 1/2 inch collet fits the GOF 1600 and GMF 1600. BeTop reducing sleeves let a larger collet take a smaller shank.
- Guide bushes: Makita template guides, Festool copying rings for the OF 900 and OF 1400, Milescraft bushing kits and UJK's stainless threaded set follow a template with a fixed offset.
- Sub-bases: UJK universal and blank sub-bases and the Milescraft compact sub-base add a larger, flatter footprint and accept standard bushings.
- Jointing systems: Festool VS 600 templates cut dovetails, finger joints and slot joints with the router; the MFS router carriage and Milescraft Pantograph Pro handle shaped and copied work.
- Router table parts: Kreg insert plate levelers and stops, SawStop brass template guides, table legs and 230V power switch, INCRA wheel kit and LS fence.
Router guide bush, base plate and collet compatibility
Guide bushes are not universal. Festool, Makita and Porter-Cable pattern bushes each mount differently, so a sub-base or adapter is the usual bridge, for example the Festool OF 1400 guide bushing adapter. Bits are under router bits, machines under wood routers, and benches under router tables.
