Cordless work lights run off the same 12V, 18V and 40V batteries as your drills and grinders, so there is no cable to trip over and no generator needed to light a site after dark. This range covers torches, area and jobsite lights, tripod lights, lanterns and inspection lamps from Bosch Professional, Makita (18V LXT and 40V XGT), Hikoki, Metabo, DeWalt, Einhell, Festool and Unilite, mostly as bare units.
Choosing a cordless work light
- Match the battery platform. A Bosch GLI 18V light takes Bosch 18V packs, a Makita DML or ML light takes Makita LXT or XGT. Check the voltage in the product name before you buy.
- Torch or area light. A torch such as the Bosch GLI 18V-300 or Makita DML815 is for pointing into a ceiling void. Jobsite lights like the Bosch GLI 18V-1900, GLI 18V-5000 and the 10,000 lumen Makita ML009G flood a whole room.
- Mounting. Look for a hook, magnetic base, tripod thread or a pivoting head if the light has to work hands-free. The DeWalt DCL079 comes on its own tripod.
Rechargeable work light or mains-powered?
Run time depends on battery size and output setting. The Einhell TE-CL 18/2000 and 18/2500 LiAC lights also run straight off a 220V plug when there is one. In a fixed workshop a mains light is cheaper per lumen; on site, in a roof or under a vehicle the battery light wins. Spare packs and chargers are in batteries and chargers, and hand-held torches and lanterns are listed separately.
