Choosing a jack hammer
- 5 to 7kg SDS-Max chipping hammer: Hikoki H41MB2, Makita HM0870C, Metabo MHEV 5 BL, Bosch GSH 5. For render, tiles, chasing and light breaking, usable horizontally all day.
- 10 to 12kg demolition hammer: Einhell TE-DH 1027, DeWalt D25899K and D25911K, Bosch GSH 11 EV, Makita HM1203C, Metabo MHEV 11 BL. The all-round class for slabs, walls and footings.
- 16 to 30kg breaker: Bosch GSH 16-28 and GSH 27 VC, Makita HM1802 and HM1812, Hikoki H65SB3, H70SA and H90SG, DeWalt D25960K, D25966 and D25981. Floor-breaking machines on 28 or 30mm hex shanks, used vertically.
- Impact energy: compare joules, not watts. Roughly 7J for chipping, 20 to 35J for slabs, 45J plus for reinforced concrete and road work.
- Vibration control: Bosch Vibration Control, Hikoki UVP and Makita AVT models reduce fatigue and keep daily trigger time within limits.
Demolition hammer vs concrete breaker
A demolition hammer is the mid-weight SDS-Max tool you can hold horizontally for walls. A breaker is the heavy hex-shank machine that works on the floor under its own weight. Buying a breaker for wall work is exhausting; buying a chipping hammer for a 150mm slab takes all week. Jack hammer prices here run from around R3 600 for a cordless Einhell to over R35 000 for the DeWalt 54V 19kg breaker. Fit the right SDS chisels and breaker bits, or see SDS Max rotary hammers if you also need to drill.
