A welding machine from Matweld covers everything from a first inverter for the garage to 500A three-phase industrial sets. We stock the Matweld range in Cape Town: MMA/ARC inverters, MIG welders, TIG sets and plasma cutters, with the consumables, clamps and cables to match. Matweld is a South African brand, and we support what we sell from our own workshop.
Choosing a welding machine
- ARC (MMA) inverters are the simplest and cheapest way to weld steel with stick electrodes. The 120A MATR199 handles light repair work; 160A and 200A units such as the MAT9005 and the VRD-equipped MAT9055VRD are the workhorses for fabrication and farm use.
- MIG welders feed wire continuously, so they are faster on sheet and tube and easier to learn. Sizes run from the compact Mini Mig 160A up to the 350A and 500A separate-feed industrial units.
- TIG welders give the cleanest welds on stainless and thin material. The 200A AC/DC digital TIG/MMA set also welds aluminium.
- Supply voltage. Everything up to about 250A runs on a 220V single-phase plug. The 300A to 500A professional VRD sets, the 315A MIG/MMA and the plasma cutters need 380V three-phase.
MIG welder vs inverter welder: which do you need?
Nearly every machine here is inverter-based, so the real choice is MIG against stick. Go MIG for production work, bodywork and thin steel where speed and a clean bead matter. Go stick if you weld outdoors in wind, on rusty or painted steel, or need to carry the machine to the job. Shrouds, tips and liners are in welding nozzles and tips, earth clamps and electrode holders in welding clamps and holders, and head protection in welding helmets.
