This range covers thicknessers, also called planer thicknessers, for bringing rough timber to a consistent, even thickness. It suits furniture makers and serious hobbyists working with rough-sawn boards, from benchtop units for a small workshop to stationary floor models for regular heavy use.
Choosing a thicknesser
Maximum planing width and depth of cut set the largest board the machine can handle in one pass, so measure against the widest stock you actually work with. Motor power affects how well the machine copes with hardwoods and wide boards without bogging down. A spiral cutterhead, where fitted, gives a quieter cut and easier blade replacement than a straight-knife head, since only individual segments need turning or swapping. Stationary machines with a cast-iron bed hold accuracy better over time than lighter benchtop units, which matters if you plane often.
